All of our instructors are experienced surfers and share a love for the ocean and for teaching. What You’ll Learn: Our students will learn basic surfing fundamentals, as well as ocean awareness, water safety, wave riding skills, and surf etiquette.
What to Expect: A typical beginner lesson includes about 5 - 10min of beach instruction. The remaining time you’ll be in the water with your instructor surfing. You’ll also have free 1 hour use of the equipment after the lesson!
Meet Our Staff
SoCal Surf Lessons was founded in the summer of 2004 by lifelong waterman Rusty Friesen. A three-year California State Lifeguard, experienced big-wave surfer and bodyboarder, and world traveler, Rusty built the company around his passion for the ocean and sharing the sport of surfing with others.
What started as a small local operation has grown into a trusted, year-round surf school based in Carlsbad, California. For over two decades, SoCal Surf Lessons has helped thousands of students experience the thrill of riding their first wave.
Our instructors bring years of real-world surfing experience gained from waves across the globe. More importantly, they are patient teachers who know how to safely introduce beginners to the ocean while helping more experienced surfers improve their skills.
Whether it’s your first time on a board or you’re looking to refine your technique, our goal is simple: give you the knowledge, confidence, and stoke to enjoy surfing for life.
