Terms & Conditions

Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using the SoCal Surf Lessons website (socalsurflessons.com), booking a lesson or rental, or participating in any of our programs, you agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions ("Terms"). If you do not agree to these Terms, please do not use our services.

These Terms apply to all visitors, clients, participants, and others who access or use our services, whether on behalf of themselves or a minor in their care.

Our Services

SoCal Surf Lessons is a licensed, bonded, and insured surf instruction business operating primarily at Carlsbad Lifeguard Tower 30, Carlsbad, California. We offer:

  • Private surf lessons (one-on-one instruction)

  • Group surf lessons (2–30 participants)

  • Surf lessons for children (ages 5 and up)

  • Surfboard and wetsuit rentals

  • Post-lesson equipment use (1 hour free with lesson)

Lessons are available year-round, seven days a week, subject to weather, ocean, and safety conditions. We reserve the right to modify, reschedule, or cancel services at our sole discretion when conditions are deemed unsafe.

Reservations & Payments

Reservations may be made online through our website, by phone, or by text. Booking a reservation constitutes your agreement to these Terms.

  • Full payment or a deposit may be required at the time of booking, as indicated during the reservation process.

  • Prices are subject to change without notice. The price confirmed at the time of your booking will be honored.

  • We accept major credit and debit cards. All transactions are processed securely through our payment processor.

  • Same-day appointments are available based on instructor availability.

Cancellations & Refunds

We understand that plans can change. Our cancellation policy is as follows:

  • Cancellations made 24 hours or more in advance will receive a full refund or credit toward a future lesson.

  • Cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance may be subject to a cancellation fee or forfeiture of deposit.

  • No-shows without prior notice will not be eligible for a refund.

  • Weather & Safety Cancellations: If we cancel a lesson due to unsafe ocean or weather conditions, you will receive a full refund or be rescheduled at no additional cost.

Assumption of Risk

⚠ Important Notice

Surfing is an outdoor water sport that involves inherent risks. By participating in our lessons or rentals, you voluntarily assume all risks associated with the activity.

You acknowledge and agree that surfing involves, but is not limited to, the following risks:

  • Contact with the surfboard, leash, or other equipment

  • Collision with other surfers, swimmers, or watercraft

  • Contact with the ocean floor, rocks, or reef

  • Strong currents, rip tides, waves, and unpredictable ocean conditions

  • Sunburn, dehydration, hypothermia, or other weather-related conditions

  • Physical injury, including sprains, fractures, or in rare cases, more serious injury

By booking and participating in a lesson or rental, you (and, for minors, your parent or legal guardian) acknowledge that you have read and understood this assumption of risk and voluntarily accept these risks.

Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, SoCal Surf Lessons, its owners, instructors, employees, and agents shall not be liable for any injury, loss, damage, accident, delay, or other harm arising out of or in connection with your participation in our services, except where caused by our gross negligence or willful misconduct.

Our total liability to you for any claim arising from your use of our services shall not exceed the amount you paid for the specific lesson or rental giving rise to the claim.

By booking, you agree to release, indemnify, and hold harmless SoCal Surf Lessons and its representatives from any and all claims, damages, losses, costs, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of your participation.

Minors & Parental Consent

We offer surf lessons for children as young as 5 years old. The following requirements apply for all participants under the age of 18:

  • A parent or legal guardian must sign a waiver and consent form before the minor participates in any lesson or rental.

  • By signing on behalf of a minor, the parent or guardian accepts these Terms and the Assumption of Risk on the minor's behalf.

  • A parent or guardian must be present on the beach during the lesson for participants under the age of 12, unless otherwise arranged in advance.

  • We reserve the right to refuse service to any minor if we reasonably determine participation poses a safety risk.

Participant Conduct

All participants are expected to behave respectfully and follow the instructions of their instructor at all times. We reserve the right to remove any participant from a lesson without refund for the following:

  • Refusal to follow instructor safety instructions

  • Disruptive, aggressive, or abusive behavior toward instructors or other participants

  • Arriving under the influence of alcohol or any controlled substance

  • Engaging in behavior that poses a risk to themselves or others

Health & Safety Requirements

For the safety of all participants, please disclose any relevant medical conditions, physical limitations, or disabilities prior to your lesson. We do not require a medical clearance but reserve the right to recommend one or decline service if we believe participation poses an unacceptable health risk.

  • Participants should be comfortable in the water and able to swim at a basic level.

  • We strongly recommend wearing sunscreen before entering the water.

  • Participants should stay hydrated and inform their instructor if they feel unwell at any time.

Equipment & Rentals

We provide top-of-the-line surfboards and wetsuits as part of all lessons. The following terms apply to equipment use and rentals:

  • Equipment must be used responsibly and only for its intended purpose.

  • Participants are responsible for any damage to equipment caused by misuse, negligence, or failure to follow instructor guidance.

  • Lost or stolen equipment will be charged to the renter at replacement cost.

  • Normal wear and tear is expected and will not be charged.

  • Rental equipment must be returned in the same condition it was received, at the agreed time.

  • Late returns may be subject to additional fees.

Intellectual Property

All content on the SoCal Surf Lessons website — including text, images, logos, graphics, and video — is the property of SoCal Surf Lessons and is protected by applicable copyright and intellectual property laws. You may not reproduce, distribute, or use our content without our prior written permission.

You grant us permission to use any photos or videos taken during your lesson for promotional or marketing purposes, unless you notify us in writing that you do not consent to such use prior to your lesson date.

Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Any dispute arising from these Terms or your use of our services shall be resolved in the courts located in San Diego County, California, and you consent to personal jurisdiction in such courts.

Changes to These Terms

We reserve the right to update or modify these Terms at any time. When changes are made, we will update the effective date at the top of this page. Your continued use of our services after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
